3 Healthier Versions Of Your Favorite Fall Drink

Autumn has a strong connection to delicious drinks – there’s nothing like a warm, steaming mug of coffee or cider on a brisk fall day! However, many of your favorite fall drinks are loaded with sugar, syrups and other unhealthy ingredients.

Not to worry – you can still make your favorite autumn drinks at home while having them fit your diet. Here are three healthier takes on fall beverages:

  1. Pumpkin Spice Latte
Let’s be honest – the pumpkin spice latte is the undisputed king of fall drinks. A store-bought version can be incredibly unhealthy, though. As Brittany Mullins, author of the blog Eating Bird Food, noted, that a tall pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks has 200 calories and 37 grams of sugar – and that’s without whipped cream! Try this healthy hack on the recipe Mullins created – it still looks and tastes just as delicious so you can live that #PSL life without the guilt (and while saving money!).

Ingredients (makes 1 serving):

8 ounces brewed coffee, or 1-2 shots of espresso
1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
3 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons maple syrup, or sweetener of choice
Sprinkle of cinnamon

1. Combine almond milk and pumpkin puree in a blender until smooth.
2. Transfer to a saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat until warm or microwave for 30-45 seconds.
3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, spices and sweetener.
4. Use a frother to foam the almond milk, or blend for 30 seconds until foamy.
5. Pour coffee into a mug and then add the foam milky on top. Sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy.

Apple Cider
Store-bought apple cider can be loaded with sugar. Instead, make your own superfood-packed version with this recipe from Healthful Pursuit. The spices included in the recipe are packed with nutritious benefits, from fighting microbes to supporting digestive health. The recipe uses homemade apple juice, but if you can’t make your own choose an organic, no-sugar added variety at the supermarket.

Ingredients (makes 4 servings):

4 cups freshly made apple juice
5 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
4 whole cardamom pods
2 Chinese star anise
1-inch piece of fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
1/2 orange, thinly sliced

1. Add apple juice to a medium-sized saucepan.
2. Add cloves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom, anise, ginger and lemon zest.
3. Cover and heat on low-medium heat for 20 minutes. Bringing it to a boil is not necessary, just make sure it reaches at least 170 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. Add orange slices during the last 5 minutes in the saucepan.
5. Remove from heat and strain to remove spices and fruits.
6. Serve immediately.
